Isolde Demands Answers; Lady Eleanor Goes Undercover Word of Adrian's secret marriage spreads through Crownmere. Marian sits with Mabel and admits the truth she hates: Adrian protects Isolde out of life-saving gratitude, and Marian is just a contract wife with a time limit. Isolde storms into Adrian's office, demanding to know who the mystery bride is. Adrian refuses her coldly, offering no comfort and no explanation. The rejection stings, but it does not stop the rumor. It reaches Adrian's godmother, Lady Eleanor Montfort. The noble countess is more intrigued than scandalized by Marian's commoner roots. Instead of sending an invitation, Lady Eleanor decides to disguise herself and visit the Royal Mercantile Guild, testing whether the new Duchess deserves her name. Isolde leaves Adrian's office humiliated—but Lady Eleanor is already choosing a plain cloak to test the maid she's heard about.
